Harvard Square has never really been a “going out” neighborhood the way parts of Boston are — there's no strip of clubs, no bottle service. What it has instead is something better if you actually like to drink: a small cluster of genuinely good bars, most of them tucked into basements, old townhouses, or hotel lobbies, built for conversation rather than crowds. After a few hundred nights spent testing that theory, here are the six I keep sending guests to.
Most of these are close enough to walk to from Ginkgo House without a coat in three seasons out of four — which, frankly, is most of the appeal. You can have a proper cocktail and be back in bed in under fifteen minutes.
Shays Pub & Wine Bar — 58 JFK St
A garden-level pub that's been a Harvard Square fixture for decades, Shays does the thing a lot of newer bars try too hard at: a genuinely well-built cocktail list, a serious wine selection, and bartenders who'll talk you through both without being precious about it. Tex-Mex bar food does the job if you're drinking on an empty stomach. My pick for: a low-key first drink of the night.
Russell House Tavern — 14 JFK St
Right in the thick of the Square but somehow still feels like a hideaway — exposed brick, low light, a bar program that leans classic without being boring. It's one of those places that's underrated precisely because it doesn't try to be an event. My pick for: a cozy, unhurried date-night drink.
Noir — 1 Bennett St (inside The Charles Hotel)
The most polished option on this list, and worth it when you want to feel like you dressed for the occasion. Craft cocktails, a genuinely curated wine list, and a lobby-bar hum that's lively without being loud. My pick for: an evening that calls for a bit of occasion.
Grendel's Den — 89 Winthrop St
Over fifty years in the Square and still one of the most-loved rooms in Cambridge — part restaurant, part bar, part informal community living room, with live music, storytelling, and poetry nights that turn up regularly. This is the one that feels like Harvard Square's actual personality, not a postcard of it. My pick for: soaking up some real neighborhood history with your drink.
Alden & Harlow — 40 Brattle St
Technically a restaurant, but the bar program stands entirely on its own — inventive, a little playful, never precious. Grab a stool if you can; the bar seats are the best seats in the house. My pick for: pairing a great cocktail with genuinely great food.
Wusong Road — 112 Mt. Auburn St
The wildcard on this list, and my favorite surprise in the neighborhood: a two-level tiki bar and New England-Chinese restaurant hidden inside a century-old building just outside the main Square. Upstairs is all rum and umbrella drinks; downstairs leans into Hong Kong-deli-style plates. It doesn't take itself seriously, and that's exactly the point. My pick for: something that doesn't feel like every other bar in Boston.
Stay Close to All of It
